00 grease in steering box?

Postby rokryder » Wed Sep 11, 2019 10:52 am

Just mindlessly wondering if 00 grease (fluid grease) would be suitable in the Yanmar steering box? I know it calls for 90wt gear lube and will use that, but, given the location of the fill plug on the steering box, it would sure be nice to have some semi-permanent lube in there. 00 grease is designed for transmissions and gear cases, so it should have the EP qualities of gear lube...again, just curious...

I think that would work just fine. The main problem with thicker wheel bearing type grease is that it just eventually seems to get stuck to the side of the gearbox and does not lubricate anything. We have taken apart dozens of steering boxes where the steering shaft was bone dry in the middle of a grease cave.
