YM2000 REBUILD 2 cylinder

Postby nothead14 » Tue Mar 19, 2019 3:19 pm

I am having issues with my yanmar being hard to start. Tractor mechanic told me I had one cylinder with low compression. Could it be a head gasket causing the issue or rings gone? If I need to rebuild I have rebuilt a car engine before with the old engines without all the new technology today. Is it the same principle for a diesel engine? Would I need to do anything different rebuilding a diesel engine. Can I buy a complete rebuild kit? What are the break in procedures for a rebuilt engine? Your help is greatly appreciated.

Low compression could be caused by leaking valves or cylinder ring wear. Head gasket could cause it. Are you getting any bubbles in your overflow bottle? Do you have excessive blow by out the crankcase vent?

Your engine is not complicated. You could do it if you have overhauled a car engine. I don't think a kit is available. This sight has a good breakdown of the parts with drawings on your model. I would advise tearing down and inspecting before ordering parts if you decide to move forward.

Any history on your engine? Ever used starting fluid on it?

Tractor does have a lot of blow by and starter fluid I’m afraid has been used to crank it. Wouldn’t crack otherwise. I know that’s not good but didn’t realize how bad it was at the time. I think I will pull the head and look for signs of issues or do you think since all the blow by it’s rings shot? Thanks for your input and support. Much appreciated.

Can only be speculation on my part but wouldn't be surprised that you find something like this.

Where did you say it could get a break down showing parts? Where do I find the correct numbers on the engine I have?

May want to speak with the parts personnel before placing order.
