Splined Coupler stripped

Postby Cwall64 » Sun May 17, 2020 1:24 pm

Thought clutch went out. Split tractor in two found the splined coupler on the transmission side stripped. Clutched looked good.
History:
Hooked up finishing mower with pto running going down a hill I pushed in the clutch to change to a lower gear. The tractor would not go into any gear from that point on. The shift would go into gear, but would not engage. Any ideas why this would strip out the coupler?

They are sort of a wear item. It is a pretty hostile environment where they live. It is not uncommon for them to eventually wear out.
