1700D blowby and shutdown

Postby ltjman22 » Thu Apr 30, 2020 10:57 am

Yanmar 1700D

I have only had the tractor out for 3 days this spring. Mostly to hit the driveway with the box blade. They other day it quit on me and right before it quit it blew a lot out of the crank case vent and blew black smoke out of the exhaust. I should mention the only problem that I have been aware of is it does not charge the battery so I need a new generator or regulator. I have not had time to test either. The oil is at the top of the hashes and the coolant level is fine. Hydro oil is in the middle of the hashes.

Now the tractor will only run for about 10 minutes before it does the same thing. Crank case vent goes wild and I get black smoke out of the exhaust right before she quits. I am able to restart after it cools down and like clock work at 10 minutes it shuts down again.

I am not a diesel guy at all so that is why I'm asking. Do I possibly have fuel in my oil? or can the faulty charging system cause this?

That is exactly what happens when a piece of the muffler's internal baffling comes loose and blocks the exhaust.

Now that you mention it I bent the muffler on a tree branch recently. I'm going to run the tractor without the muffler and see if it continues. I'll check back.

Muffler isn't clogged. It still shut down. Made it 12 minutes this time. Back to the drawing board.

what about the exhaust manifold? Maybe the blockage is back a bit further than the muffler?
