YM1500D Cylinder Head Bolt Removal

Postby stepheal » Thu Apr 23, 2020 9:52 am

I am rebuilding the engine on my YM 1500D due to a cracked engine block. Moving all of the components from the old block to the new one seems straightforward, except that I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the old cylinder head bolts out of the block. There's nothing to get a purchase on. Anyone have any suggestions?

https://www.hoyetractor.com/PROD/124160-01210.htm Shows to take 1 of that one and 5 of 124160-01200. Maybe can substitute. Aaron would know.
Tried a pipe wrench?

You usually just screw two nuts onto the stud and then lock them together (unscrew the bottom nut and tighten the top nut). Then you can unscrew the stud using the bottom nut.

Thanks Aaron. That helped me remove 2 of them so far. The other 4 are a bit more stubborn - going to try a 3 nut approach tomorrow, as both nuts are turning when just using 2

Just thought I'd finalize this thread with a note to say that using 3 nuts locked against each other allowed me to get the 4 remaining studs out. Thanks again Aaron for the tip.
