YM2000 starter

Postby tim/m » Tue Mar 10, 2020 3:40 pm

Starter spins when key is turned, but doesn't engage fly wheel to turn engine. Replaced solenoid on starter, cleaned the drive gear and shaft on starter, and checked gear on fly wheel for damage. Starter sounds as though the gear on starter is coming out and hitting fly wheel gear but not meshing to turn engine.

It could be that the starter drive is slipping. You can bench check it by seeing if you can spin the gear both directions with a screwdriver or small pry bar.

Is this the same starter that has been working or a different one? Just wanting to make sure you don't have a wrong count of the starter tooth.

It's the same starter, I've owned this tractor for 20 years. It began this last year and I replaced the solenoid, but there wasn't any change. It will engage after several tries but I am worried abut damaging the gear on fly wheel. There is slight lateral movement between the shaft od and gear id, like maybe the bushing is worn slightly. Might remove and measure to be sure the starter shaft isn't worn tapered and make a new bushing????

Might be worth it to take it to a starter shop and let them take a look at it.
