1500D Knuckle seal mess

Postby Hoople79 » Mon Dec 16, 2019 6:53 pm

Hi everyone,
Both of my knuckle seals are leaking. I took the left one off first, only to find that the seal seems to be welded to the upper cover. I have tried everything I know to get it off. Upon closer inspection the cover must have got hit with a boulder or something ( I live in the mountains) so now I need a new cover. My question lies in that i pulled the shaft out to try and get at the seal better. Will the shaft come out just by removing the retaining clip on the gear? Or is there something else to do with the bearing in the cover I should know about? Also, what is the best way to remove the bearing to replace it in the new cover?
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!

P.S. after all this I am almost scare to take off the other side :)

Have you gone to the parts diagrams on this sight? Nice drawings showing how it goes together. Just click on the parts block above and take off. Not meaning to avoid your question. Just not sure you have been to the drawings.

Hey Winston glad to hear from you!

I have been to the diagram and it looks like if i take the retainer clip off the shaft it should pull out correct? That solves one issue:) my other question is what is the best way to get the bearing in the knuckle cover out? Need to have that for the new cover.

thanks,!

If I am correct in thinking you are wanting to remove the spindle from the lower housing then after removing the lower bolts and then snap ring #56 it sure looks like it should slide down through the rest of the parts. Never done it on your model so not sure. We are talking red here?
that upper bearing will not be expensive, however, it should tap out easy from the top if you work back and forth gently side to side.

Sorry Winston my bad, yes we are talking red. However my question relates to clip#47, bearing#48 and shaft#43 on the internal red diagram. Any thought would be appreciated, thanks!

I guess I am off in left field. #43, 47, 48 are all on the axle shaft. I thought you were working on the knuckle seal and related parts.

I am also confused. #43, 47, 48 do not come off with the knuckle.

Ok guys maybe i have confused you, for that I apologize. I was having such a tough time getting the knuckle seal out I pulled out the axle with the knuckle cover so I could get at it better, so now I have an axle a knuckle cover attached to it with the gear #44 and the bearing #48 Keeping me from separating the knuckle cover so can replace it. I am looking for advice on removing the gear and bearing.

Again my apologies.

Still not sure I am understanding. if you are having to replace #34 then remove bolts #37 to remove #34.

I am understanding #s44 & 48 are on the internal red. Your first post stated you needed to replace the upper cover. I am thinking the upper cover is #34 on the red external drawing, Is that correct?

If you remove bolts #37 on the external drawing you can separate the knuckle cover and axle housing. Have you done that?

Hey Winston, Merry Christmas!
Yes I have removed the axle from the knuckle cover, was worried the bearing in the knuckle cover would not come out, but I got it out. i am now waiting for my new knuckle cover to arrive, with the knuckle seal and the bearing already in it.

Should I be able to slide the axle right back into the housing when I am reassembling everything or is there a trick to it?
really appreciate all your feedback and patience with me.
thanks!

Have not been there, done that, but looking at the drawings, I would say the axle should slide right through the axle housing and might have to turn a little to line the splines up but should slide right into the ring gear. Hope that is what you are asking. Merry Christmas to your and yours also!
