Bare minimum to fix 4wd knuckle leak?

Postby 777funk » Fri Jun 07, 2019 9:26 am

Can I just replace the lip seal(s) and get it back on the road?

I have the typical leak right here on my 336d.

It depends on if there is wear or damage to the surface that the seal rides on. If there is damage or grooves then a new seal will not fix your problem. If it is just that your seal has dried out or cracked and is just no longer sealing then, yes, a new seal should fix it- or you might also be able to stop the leak with some Bars Leak type stuff.

May also have worn bearings.

Bearings seem ok (at least the side I just pulled). I rotated the hub and watched and listened to the bearing and it's smooth as silk.

I wonder if I can change just the lip seal (the one sandwiched between the upper and lower halves) and be ok.

Based on your measurements you must have the old style. https://www.hoyetractor.com/CTGY/3364WDEXT-OLD.htm

Hoping you have read this also. https://www.hoyetractor.com/PROD/AS-6064.htm

I pulled the knuckle (4 bolts) and other than being heavy (probably 50 lbs) and hard to line up while holding the weight, it's a very easy piece to remove and replace. The lip seal that goes between the two halves was where it was leaking. I put an o-ring (dash size 142 --- which is 60mm ID, 2.6mm width) around the sleeve that the lip seal groove rides on then put the lip seal back on that and put it back together. No more leaks. I guess it just needed a little more squish. We'll see if it holds up long term.

EDIT: One day of hard use and it is leaking again.
