1401 rear axle seal

Postby dagnblond » Sat May 18, 2019 1:47 pm

1 of my rear axle seals is leaking and I contacted Hoye and was told all I need was seals and gasket for the top
I can't get the axle out even after removing the side housing the axle and removing the 2 bolts on end of axle and yes wheels and hubs are off any hints here or are the bearings pressed onto the axle

Not sure I am understanding. I am thinking you have removed side housing with gear and bearing exposed. Assuming you have removed the end retainers (21,22,23) then yes, you might need a puller to remove bearing and gear.

yes I removed the side housing and in looking between gear and housing I noticed the reason for the seal failure is the outer bearing went bad

Aren't the seal and bearing both in the side cover, or are both bearings bad?

the seal is in the housing but it appears that the axle will have to be removed before the seal can be removed and replaced and bearing seems pressed on and I can't find anywhere close to here that can press the old off and new on

well ended up taking it to John Deere dealer since I don't have tools to pull the bearings and replace them, went ahead and had both sides done with new bearings and seals, well the side that was leaking is fixed but for some reason the other side has become a problem they are about to install seal number 3 and I'm starting to wonder if they know what they are doing

At least they are still trying. Just hope they don't give up.

and it goes on just getting worse, turns out their tech removed "rust" from the axle in question even though I saw no rust when I removed it the first time and now seal number 3 failed so it's become obvious that he ground the axle to the point of not being able to seal. the service manager doesn't want to pay the 350.00 to get a used axle so he says he's gonna look into the possibility of a machine shop fixing it. well I'll wait a few days but then I will have to start a different avenue as I've already been without a tractor for a month and a half and can't just go out and buy a new tractor

I know it hasn't been good having all this time pass and no results, however, the service manager is still after a solution. Keep us informed of the conclusion.

the service manager says he miked the axles and they are the same so he's insisting that I've gotten 3 bad seals in a row and there's nothing more they can do. so I have to go pick it up and try to figure out how to do it myself so at least I can take it apart and inspect it myself to see what actually needs to be done. not going to be the easiest task from a wheelchair but It'll get done
