New Gear Reduction starter

Postby Sean » Mon Apr 22, 2019 6:17 am

I installed the gear reduction starter from Hoye this winter.
It has been fine up to now. When I try to start, I get nothing not even a click.
I have been able to get the starter to work if I give it a couple of taps with a wooden mallet. But not all the time.
I pulled the starter off and I can't get it to move the solenoid. I opened up the contacts and made sure the solenoid is free. I can get it to move sometimes on the bench with a battery charger but it doesn't work in the tractor.
Everything else checks out okay.

You must determine if the starter works, or does not work, on the bench before proceeding.

Testing a starter with a battery charger is sometimes problematic. They don't usually make enough amperage (or maybe just the alligator clamps can't transfer enough amperage?) to fully energize the bigger starters.. even in 'boost' mode. You end up with erratic test results (similar to what you have posted). We always test the starters with an actual charged battery to eliminate that as a variable.
