Ym 1500 hard to start

Postby Brent5631 » Mon Apr 08, 2019 7:21 pm

So I bought a not running 1500. Guy said he had it running before but it sat a year and wouldnt start. It didn't have a Fuel filter and lines were crummy so I started there.
So new lines, fuel filter assembly. Opened the side panel and checked that the fuel rack moves freely. Bled both screws and cracked the lines at the injector. Got drips of fuel out of each then tightened up.

Still wouldnt start after many trys. Got it to start with a shot of ether which I know is bad but it ran for 2-3 min. It would adjust engine speed with the throttle. Dont know rpm since gauge is broken.

I stepped away and the throttle shut and it died. And would not restart.

Wondering what I should do or check next?
Thanks.

Any smoke out the exhaust or blow by out the crankcase vent when you had it running for a few minutes? If there not already busted you may well bust your piston lands with the ether. If it ran a while and then wouldn't crank again it would seem the fuel system was bled. Sure can't know but it could be low compression. Are you using the compression release and getting a fast spin when trying to crank? Throttle in wide open position?

If the starter was spinning the engine plenty fast then my guess would be low compression.

After reading more a compression check seems in order. Also after watching some videos I think mine was only running on one cylinder. I didnt see much smoke and I still had the side cover off so didnt see much blowby.

I was using the decomp lever and let it crank once or twice before letting off.

I would re-bleed. . .fuel should run out , no bubbles, at bleed screws beginning nearest tank. Crack injector lines while cranking, fuel should spurt vigorously.. . . then, if no-go, deal with compression check.

Ok. Pulled injector connections off completely to watch the fuel pulses. Didnt get anything from the rear line (#1?). Also had bubbles at the pump again. Think I need to replace the crush washers there as it was wet still.

Any tricks to free up the pump? Or just buy a replacement?

" Also had bubbles at the pump again. " Get rid of the bubbles. It won't pump until you do.
