Ym1500 head gasket orientation

Postby Hnewman144 » Fri Feb 23, 2018 9:54 am

The head gasket on my 1500 looks symmetrical. Is there a wrong way to put it on on the 1500?

The gasket in the picture below would be upside down. The side that you can see (with the rings around the cylinders) would go down.

That sucks looks like I'll be pulling the head back off and putting another gasket. Proud I didn't start it yet. What would happen if it was installed up side down? All the holes lined up either way?

It would probably work fine but I would not risk it. That is one of the few Yanmar head gaskets that are symmetrical. Most of the others have a hole on one side and not the other so it is pretty easy to tell. I had to go look at a few original engines to be sure on this one. You can see the mark of the little 'bridge' piece between the cylinders on the heads.

Yeah, the small bridge in between the the cylinder holes on the gasket is the only noticable difference in the two sides. Im told the small raise goes upwards instead of down wards. I installed it toward the block. So now I'm pulling it back off and replacing it again.
