General questions about head gasket replacement

Postby agirlandhertractor » Fri Aug 18, 2017 7:19 am

Have a couple questions that may apply to all of our tractors:

1) I'm using a professional straight edge for checking head warpage. There is ever so slight gap for light in a couple of spots, but I can barely fit the thinnest feeler gauge I have through it. I can't read the numbers on the gauge though, but it is maybe a hair's breadth wide?

What is considered "too much"? Should we expect absolutely no light to shine under the straight edge?

2) What is the BEST head gasket sealer to use for minor imperfections? Please give a product name or link to a listing on amazon.

We usually use two layers of copper coat.

Whose specs are those? My Yanmar manual not handy but always heard, and 3 GM V6 manuals all say .005" head distortion allowed before resurfacing. If more than .010" resurface required to achieve, replace head.

Yanmar YM226 service manual. YM186 & YM336 service manual says the same.

I agree with Norm. The 276 manual states new part .0012", maximum distortion .004". I believe the other manuals are misprints. The I&T manual for the 135,155,195,240,330 states maximum distortion .0039" l

Looks like YANMAR got the MM to Inch conversion wrong!
0.03mm = 0.0012"
0.1mm = 0.0039"

Good coating of Copper coat will fix that.
