EX3200 PTO Stopped Working

Postby TNMan53 » Sat Jun 10, 2017 9:42 pm

While mowing my yard with a finish mower the PTO suddenly stopped turning. No noise, just stopped. The wheels still turn normally. The lever to engage still moves up and down normally with some resistance as normal when moving to engage but will move up with or without clutch being depressed. I removed the mower and the PTO shaft can be turned by hand but requires some force, does not spin freely. Oil level in gear box is full. Any ideas what I can try? I do not know anything about clutches. Thanks.

I don't know much about the EX series but the PTO shifter appears to be mechanical (not electric or hydraulic). Is your tractor's transmission HST or gear drive?

I have been trying to study the parts drawings for that tractor but I just don't know enough about the newer Cub/Yanmar tractors to be able to help. You may need to visit your dealer to help determine what happened.

I also looked over some of the parts pages. It would seem to me to access any of the internal shifting mechanism you would have to remove the hydraulic cylinder case. i have no idea whether your trouble is there or in the gears or one way clutch that would have to be accessed through the rear.

Thanks for the replies. I have a call into the dealer, not sure if he still services these or not since he no longer sells them.

OK, dealer can't get to it for 3 weeks, so stupid question: There is a turnbuckle connecting clutch pedal to gearbox, if the turnbuckle is too loose would this release the clutch and stop the PTO? Can I cause any damage by adjusting the turnbuckles?

It looks like (the best I can tell) your transmission/HST pump gets driven by the same clutch so if the clutch was slipping the tractor would not move. In normal operation, if you depress the clutch does the tractor stop moving?

if the turnbuckle is too loose would this release the clutch and stop the PTO

It is usually the other way - if it is too loose it will not release.

Re: EX3200 PTO Stopped Working- Repaired-maybe

Postby TNMan53 » Thu Aug 17, 2017 8:30 pm

Follow up. Took tractor to be repaired. Mechanic said it was a spring that engages the clutch that was stuck so he freed it up and I brought it home for the cost of 2 hours labor. Perfect, I thought, for one day, then it stopped working again so back to the shop it went. This time the mechanic said he talked to Yanmar engineer who said this was a fairly common problem? Anyway, he recommended replacing the spring, clutch and PTO shaft. Took 3 weeks to get the shaft so I have been without a tractor for a month and my grass is knee high. Brought the tractor home today but have not had a chance to try it out yet and I am $765 poorer. :(

I thought that line came with a 2-yr warranty -- but 5 yrs on the powertrain -- which presumably includes the clutch.
