Yanmar 276 4x4 shaft

Postby Joe10 » Tue Jan 19, 2021 11:21 am

I lost 4x4 in my 276d, pulled back the driveshaft covers and found that the ball bearings had fallen out at the driveshaft end at the rear of the tractor.
The cotter pin on the driveshaft is still in place and the spring seems ok.
My question is, what would cause the 6 ball bearings to fall out and how are they reinstalled? the output shaft doesn't seem to be worn.
Thanks in advance.

The spring #24 holds tension against the coupler #21 which holds the balls in place. If the spring gets weak or broken they can fall out.

See post below for a good writeup about that shaft

ok thanks, and does the spring provide the tension for the other end where my problem is? it looks like i am missing number 19 from that diagram. it looks like there is no retainer between the driveshaft end and the output shaft.

The spring just forces the shaft & coupler apart- so it will put tension on both ends of the shaft.
