My FX20D is making a loud popping/ Clacking noise when driving, either straight or when turning. It seems to be coming from the left side. I've been trying to open the gearbox that sits directly behind the wheel. I've removed all the bolts but haven't been able to separate the two halves.
I found a couple photos posted from other members that show the entire axle assembly but I'm hoping the issue is in the gear box. Does anyone have any tricks to get the gearbox cover off?
OH The Differential lock is not pressed down.

FX20D Rear End Issue

Re: FX20D Rear End Issue
Probably no need but your axle housing will come right off the transmission housing. A picture of an FX24D removed.
Never took the outer housing off but looking at the FX24D drawings I believe that outer housing should just come off. It will have a couple of dowel pins that will tend to hold it. Also bearings will have to come out of housing. You will need to come off good and square. Basing this on what I see in the FX24D drawings. Have not been there, done that, nor do I have a repair manual. No parts manual on the Fx20D but believe it to be built the same as the FX24D.

Re: FX20D Rear End Issue
Thanks for the reply Winston. The noise seems to be a bearing issue in the outer housing so I had to get it apart. I'll post some break down photos just so they will be on here. Seems there is a two photo limit so I'll have to do several posts to show all the parts

Re: FX20D Rear End Issue
Your bearings are identical to the FX24D parts manual. I do not believe any of them are to be sealed bearings. Did you find a bad bearing?
Your outer seal number is likely 194447-14140. Different part numbers: http://www.kakapart.com/parts/yanmar-19444714140.html , or here: https://www.hoyetractor.com/PROD/AS-4447.htm
If your gaskets tore up you may have to cut new ones. I believe it will be important making sure you have the same thickness material if you do have to cut new ones.

6208-- https://www.hoyetractor.com/PROD/6208-2RS.htm
6209-- https://www.hoyetractor.com/PROD/6209-2RS.htm
All are sealed but you can pop the seals out.

Re: FX20D Rear End Issue
The main bearing of the wheel shaft is a bit grindy with a few metal shavings around the area but no non-working bearings, but without a load kinda hard to be certain. Since I have the torn apart I'll probably do both sides and inspect the center for filings as well. To freaking cold and wet to do anything else.
All of the bearings on one side totaled $66 so not a large investment to do both sides plus the right side looks to be leaking a bit.
