Hello, i recently acquired a ym165d that the previous owner replaced the alternator on a few months prior to me purchasing the tractor. It was over charging at 17v at full rpm. I verified that it was the proper alternator(AL-1500R) and purchased a new 3 wire regulator from hoye. After installing the regulator it seemed to have fixed the problem to an extent but it is still over 15v at full rpm and the regulator is so hot you cannot touch it. I have the service manual and everything is testing fine all the wiring has been traced not grounding out all the connections are good so what am i missing?
Yes voltage is taken at the battery. The battery is also new (less than 3 mos old). Alternator diods are testing good +to+ -to- i have continuity when reversed its OL. I ran all new wires per the shop manual, new key switch wired per manual and the diagram on hoye website corresponds with the manual. Also the voltage does not change weather the regulator is plugged in or not

I think that is a sign something is wired wrong. If you unplug the regulator then you also unplug the generator connection so there is no way it could still be charging.
I also thought that was strange however, the manual states " tester indication at non load voltage between lead (+) (red) and generator body approx more than 28v. If the red lead from the generator goes to the starter solenoid (+) then back to the battery wouldn't that make a complete circuit regardless if the regulator is plugged in or not as the generator body is grounded making a complete circuit?
Update: after verifying all the wiring and dynamo were 100% correct and functional i sourced a 3 wire regulator locally from a kubota dealer. The tractor has now been running for 30 min at 1500 rpm and the voltage at the battery is 13.5v, 2500rpm 14.4v perfect! Regulator not hot but slightly warm. First regulator i purchased was bad.
