John Deere 650 Grinding

Postby warburtonplayer » Sun Aug 23, 2020 4:03 pm

I have a John Deere 650 I just got the engine back from the engine shop on 08/21/20 after a full rebuild. I put a new clutch on and put it back together I did not put a throw out bearing in it because the one that was in it seemed to be ok. When I put the tractor back together everything went fine and when I tried to put it in gear it grinned but went into gear and same with the high low. I adjusted the clutch with one inch of play and the high low went in and out with no grinding but the clutch was almost impossible to get into gear due to the grinding. Is the culprit the throw out bearing?

Was your pilot bushing to shaft a good tight fit? I read where free play was to be 3/8 to 3/4" on pedal. Might not help but if you tightened it up a hair more it could make a difference.

I checked the throw out bearing and it did not wobble and it spun fine. I did not pull the shaft out or the pilot bushing even though I bought both. I am going to pull it apart and put both in. Once I was able to put the tractor in gear the clutch seems fine.

Would be easy to adjust clutch pedal a hair tighter before going forth with the split.
